Having lived in the dusty, crazy and loud industrial suburb of West Melbourne for 5 years, the idea of finally using it as a backdrop for a wedding was pretty exciting. It’s a hood that not too many people venture. Usually people pass through simply to get somewhere else. But I lived there for so long that whenever I heard a semi trailer tearing past at 5am, it felt just like home.
Only a few weeks after shooting this wedding, I started packing up my house to move to the other side of the city for a new change and a new chapter, so an industrial warehouse wedding in my hood was the perfect parting gift.
Lauren and Steve chose Gather + Tailor, a warehouse style space in West Melbourne as their venue. The couple exchanged vows under a floral arbor before venturing out with me to some of the best trucking routes and shipping container yards the area had to offer for their portraits. The rest of the night was a whirlwind of great food, speeches, confetti canons and Mariah Carey remixes. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect West Melbourne send off.
I still miss that neck of the woods. The noise, the dust, the chaos. Even the guy who used to kick over my bin on bin night. It was a gem of a spot and from time to time I still find myself driving over that way, just out of habit.
